Distillation Dynamics

Although there has been a lot of great theory written on the subject of Distillation, there is always room for another way of explaining the process using different words, different images, and a different approach to such a simple yet seemingly complex process.

  • This Web Page explains the Distillation Dynamics by watching the temparature changes and the energy levels  throughout the process.
  • The dynamic Equilibrium of a distillation column is directly related to the temperture at each step of the process.
  • The advantage of following the temperature gradiants is that it can ba done with a simple thermometer
  • For this, we will place 8 Thermometers along the proces and watch the ethanol proof increase to its wanted level
  • [T1: Liquid in the boiler]  Placed 4" ( 100 mm ) Below the top of the liquid
  • [T2: Vapor entering the bubbler]
  • [T3: Start Up the reflux column]
  • [T4: Mid-Way up the reflux column]
  • [T5: Top of the reflux column]
  • [T6: Condenser entry]
  • [T7: Mid-Way in the condenser]
  • [T8: End of the condenser]

T1: Boiling temperature v/s alcohol content
